When I moved to Australia a few years ago, I was surprised by all the nice cafés I found there and by how good the coffee was. After working for a coffee brand and training as a barista, also when I was in Ireland, I found it really impossible to drink coffee in the traditional Parisian cafés.
Nobody in Paris seemed to realise that their “café crème” was not very tasty…until some Aussies, British and French expats started to set up their own coffee shops in the city.
Although lots of cafés still serve tasteless coffee, more and more places have opened, offering proper cappuccinos, espressos and lattes. How nice !
They are usually quite cosy and offer some good options for breakfasts and lunches as well as free wifi.
Since many of you coming to visit from Australia, still ask me where to find good coffee in Paris, I thought I would list a few of those nice cafés.
The Caféothèque is where it all started. It’s also a place where you can come for tasting sessions. The café was founded by Gloria Montenegro, a former Guatemalan ambassador.
Opened by a French-Australian duo, Coutume Café was one of the first to bring fresh coffee into town and to let you choose your preferred method of brewing.
Loustic has also become a neighbourhood favorite among the locals.
Like Coutume Café, Café Lomi is another great French-Australian partnership. The beans are even roasted on site.
Kookaburra is very popular among locals and students, just off the famous rue des Martyrs. But if you are looking for a more modern and ultra-chic looking place, you can head to Café Craft, only a few minutes from the Canal St Martin, or to the charming little Ten Belles.
Télescope and the Fondation Café are some other small and charming good spots. The Fondation Café was launched by the same Aussie export, Chris, who opened Ten Belles.
All these cafés, and many others, have become Parisian hotspots and are the perfect places to sip an espresso, a cappuccino or a latte.
